Measurements and Data Management

Central realization of measurements within the framework of RAVE research projects since 2008

Duration of the projects:
RAVE - Messserviceprojekt I: 01.02.2008 - 31.10.2011
RAVE - Messserviceprojekt II: 01.11.2011 - 31.01.2017
RAVE Offshoreservice: 01.02.2017 - 31.01.2020

Contract numbers of the projects:
RAVE - Messserviceprojekt I: 0325026
RAVE - Messserviceprojekt II: 0325026A
RAVE Offshoreservice: 0325026B

Main Goals

  • coordination of the RAVE research measurements
  • implementation of the measurement concept
  • installation and technical realisation of measurements
  • operation, maintenance and inspection of gauges
  • logistics
  • data management, preparation and provision of data for the integrated database

Motivation

The purpose of the RAVE research initiative accompanying the setup and operation of the alpha ventus test site is to acquire a broad knowledge and experience base for future offshore wind farms. The research focuses on the technical aspects of installing offshore structures at large depths (> 20 m), potential load conditions, mutual influencing of offshore structures, relevant marine environmental factors, and operational safety of offshore wind farms. Comprehensive measurement data are indispensable to this research. The project comprises the making of measurements and the planning and efficient co-ordination of measurements to be made as part of the individual subprojects. The purpose of this project is to provide a measurement service to all RAVE sub-projects and to all institutes, authorities and companies involved.

Monitoring programs

The measurement project is divided into several work packages covering a wide range of measurements (load conditions, construction and operational noise, vibration etc.) and meeting the measuring requirements of the individual subprojects. A central component of test field research is measurements at the offshore structures themselves. Due to the different installation and foundation types used (AD 5-116 and Senvion M5), measurements on both types are necessary. Furthermore, oceanographic and geological observations will be carried out during the wind turbine setup phase in order to obtain reliable information about interactions taking place between offshore facilities and the marine environment.

Coordination & project partners

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) co-ordinates the measurement setup and is in charge of instrument maintenance; it supervises all measurements carried out during the research project and carries out hydrographic and geological measurements at the „alpha ventus“ test site. UL International GmbH (DEWI) is responsible for the installation and maintenance of measuring instruments at the Adwen turbines AV07 and AV08, and DNV supervises measurements at the AV04 and AV05 turbines. Furthermore, UL International (DEWI) developed the overall measuring concept for all RAVE research projects. DNV is in charge of the offshore and onshore logistics.
